By the 1930's hairstyles were becoming more feminine again and the start of the decade marked the beginning of the 'Hollywood Golden Age'. 1930's Hairstyles were more soft and glamorous than the previous decade.

At the start of the 1930's women had quickly decided that they were no longer content with fighting against their female form and didn't want to continue the trend of waif like physiques and boyish looks.

Jean harlow wavy hair New icons were becoming popular such as actresses Jean Harlow and Mae West (shown left).
She encouraged the trend of bleaching women's hair to almost a white blonde and many fans copied her style.
Other actresses tinted and coloured their hair in various shades.
Finger waves and pin curls are definitely the way to go if you want to re-create the 30's look.

The waves were softer and framed the face. The softer and wavier, the better. 1930s joan crawford

The length of the hair was slightly longer than that of the 1920's Bob.
Joan Crawford was very popular actress and style icon who wore waves and curls in her hair.
The typical 1930's hairstyle would be parted in the middle or on the side and worn under exquisite large brimmed and smaller hats.

The hairstyles were sculpted to within an inch of their lives, there was no room for the 'messy neat' style that many people sport these days.
1930's hairstyles had names such as the 'Saucer Wave', 'Marcel Wave', 'Sculptor Wave' and so on.

How to create a 1930's fingerwave style:

This style looks best on short and bobbed hair.
Long haired girlies can also try this by waving the hair at the front and tying the longer hair at the back onto a chignon bun.
Follow these steps:

  • Wash and towel dry your hair, leaving it damp, apply a firm hold gel or setting lotion to the side or section of hair you are starting with.
  • Pull hair on the crown of your head, or part, back and downward, and place finger or rat tail comb over it.
  • Pull a small section of hair forward, creating a wave pattern, and pin using a bobby pin or wave clip.
  • 30's fingerwave hairstyleOnce pinned, remove your finger, and keep repeating the first two steps until you have coered your chosen section with waves.
  • End the finger wave with a spit curl, which is a small curl stuck onto the face, usually on and around the forehead and ears, by taking the end of the strand and curling it inward. Stick it down with some gel.
  • Once this is done, wrap your hair with a satin scarf and sit under a hood dryer intil your hair is completely dry. Depending on your hair texture this could be up to 30 minutes.
  • Once out of the dryer, you can spray spritz on the style to keep it in place for up to a week (although your head might be a bit itchy by then)
